How this collection was chosen

Read with care

Selections include psalms about guidance, proverbs about learning, stories of courage, and letters about faithful work. They differ in genre and audience; we have not turned a promise to one ancient person into a prediction for a graduate.

Joshua 1 addresses Joshua at a particular transition in Israel’s story. Jeremiah 29 speaks to exiles, so it is not used here as a personal career promise. Follow each chapter link to understand the original setting.

How to use these passages

For a card, pair a brief passage with your own specific encouragement. For a ceremony, choose a complete reading and check that it fits the people present. Compare wisdom and Gospel texts rather than assuming every verse speaks about achievement.
